Steven
Founder & Director, AberMusic
Steven Swindells is a British tenor, pianist, and music educator based in Aberystwyth, Wales. He holds a Master of Performance in Voice and a Graduate Diploma in Voice from the Royal College of Music (studying with Alison Wells and David Rendall) and a BMus (Hons) in Piano Performance from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (principal study with Victor Sangiorgio). He has also undertaken ABRSM examiner training.
As Founder and Director of AberMusic, Steven maintains a teaching studio offering lessons in classical voice, musical theatre, piano, musicianship, and music theory. He maintains a busy studio with a large cohort of regular students, preparing them for examinations (ABRSM and Trinity up to post-Grade 8), auditions for conservatoire and university programmes, and public performances. Students from his studio have progressed to institutions including Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, Urdang Academy, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the University of Birmingham.
Steven teaches across classical, musical theatre, and contemporary repertoire, with particular emphasis on healthy vocal technique, diction coaching (English, Italian, German, French, Latin, and Welsh), and integration of musicianship with performance. He has extensive experience working with neurodivergent learners, including students with ADHD and autism spectrum conditions.
Highlights of his performing career include opera engagements with British Youth Opera at the Peacock Theatre, London, and Longborough Festival Opera (including Tristan und Isolde, Fidelio, and Der fliegende Holländer). As a tenor soloist he has performed Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. He is also a collaborative pianist who co-founded the Vellen Ensemble piano trio, with concerts throughout the UK and commercial recordings of Mozart and Haydn repertoire.
Previously, Steven taught at Chigwell School, Kew House School, and Trinity School in London, where he served as Musical Director for productions and accompanied chapel choirs. He was Co-Founder and Head of Performance at Conservatoire Cerdd in Wales, a specialist pre-professional training programme.
